Fred Burkle crept through the shadows of a nearby cave, trying her best not to be seen. It had been a bad night and all she wanted to do was sleep and feel safe. But that was next to impossible in Pylea. As she darted in and out of tree paths, she felt something behind her and noticed that something was chasing her. A big something. A big, furry, toothy something. She felt herself breathing harder as she took a right and darted down a path in the woods. As the path became darker and darker, she felt her foot slip on a rock and she fell. As she tried to find her way to safety, she heard someone call her name.
"Fred, Fred, Fred! Wake up!" A voice said in her ear. "It was only a dream. Come on. It's okay." Then she felt someone start to shake her. She tried to push him or her away, but she wasn't successful. Whoever it was she or he was determined on waking her up. Just then, she bolted upright and started breathing hard. She didn't know where she was. As she felt herself falling forward, she felt a pair of hands catch her. She looked up to see Gunn's concerned face looking back.
"Charles... I thought... I thought..." She said as tears streamed down her face.
"Shh," he soothed as he hugged her close. "It's okay. It's okay."
Across the room, Amy sat up in bed and looked across the room, sensing something was wrong. Her eyes fell upon Fred and she jumped out of bed and ran over to her.
"Aunt Fred, what's wrong? Are you okay? Should I get Daddy?" Gunn shook his head and Fred looked away to assure her niece.
"I'm fine sweetheart," she said as she gave her a hug. "Now go back to bed."
"I'll get back in bed, but I don't think I'll be able to sleep," Amy said with a frown as she crossed the room again.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Gunn asked as he gave Fred a kiss and another hug. Fred shook her head.
"No thanks, Charles. Not tonight." Gunn nodded and helped Fred to lay back down.
"Are you going to be okay?" Gunn asked in concern.
"Yeah, I'll be fine," she replied, not sure if she really believed her own lie.
"All right. I'll see ya in the morning." With that, Gunn left the room to go check on a now fussing Connor.
"Aunt Fred?" Amy asked as she sat up again.
"Yeah, honey?" Fred asked as she turned around to face her.
"Are you gonna be okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." Fred said as she turned over.
"What happened?" Amy persisted.
"I-I had a bad dream," Fred said truthfully. "I had a bad dream." Amy looked surprised.
"You had a bad dream?" Fred laughed softly and nodded.
"Well don't look so surprised. Even grown-ups have bad dreams," she told her. Amy nodded as she got out of bed again and walked over to sit next to her aunt. Fred put her arm around Amy and gave her a hug. Amy leanded her head against Fred's shoulder and closed her eyes.
"Sweet dreams," she said softly.
"You too, sweetheart," Fred said as she gave her a kiss.
"Aunt Fred?" Amy said as Fred covered her with a blanket.
"You'll always be part of our Ohana, right?" Fred smiled and gave her another hug.
"Always," Fred replied as she gave Amy another hug, then settled down to get some more sleep.
The next day, Fred woke up to find the room empty. She got ready and went downstairs. She found the gang in the kitchen. Connor was in Cordy's arms being fed a bottle and Amy was at the table eating a bowl of cereal. When Amy saw Fred, she jumped up and ran over to her.
"You're awake! You're finally awake." She threw her arms around Fred's waist and Fred hugged her back.
"Good morning to you too, sweetie. What time did you get up?"
"Eight o' clock," Amy replied. Fred nodded and sat down beside Amy at the table. A few mnutes later, Amy leaned over and whispered in Fred's ear, "Are you feeling better?" Fred nodded as she tried not to look like anything was wrong. She didn't want to alarm the others unnecessarily.
After Amy was done her breakfast, Amy followed Fred into the living room and sat beside her on the couch. Fred put her arm around the five year old girl and gave her a hug. "What's this all about, huh?" Fred asked as Amy laid her head on her shoulder once again. "Is something wrong? Do you wanna talk about anything?" Amy shook her head. "Are you sure?" Fred asked.
"I'm positive," Amy replied. "I'm just worried about you that's all. I wanna make sure you're okay." Fred smiled warmly.
"Aw, that's sweet. I'm fine, sweetheart. I promise you." Amy nodded, but for some reason, she didn't believe her.
A few hours later, Amy was in the living room playing a game of Sonic the Hedgehog on Gunn's game consult when she overheard Gunn and Angel talking in the lobby. Putting the controller down gently, Amy crept into the room to listen.
"Do you think she's homesick and wants to go back home to Texas?" Angel was asking Gunn.
"I'm not sure, man." Gunn replied. "I just know she was pretty upset. Something must have scared her."
"Well did you try talking to her about it?" Angel wanted to know.
"Yeah," Gunn answered as he took a sip of his coffee, "but she didn't wanna talk. And I didn't want to force her to tell me what was wrong. That ain't cool."
"You're right about that," Angel agreed.
"I wonder what it is."
"You're not the only one," Angel said as he got up from his chair. "Maybe she'll talk to me." Gunn shrugged and got up also. As she heard them leave, Amy ran upstairs to find Fred.
By the time Amy reached the second floor, she was in tears. She found her in Cordy's room. The two women were doing each other's hair. Or rather, Cordy was braiding Fred's hair, while Fred jabbered on about her recent date with Gunn.
"He really bought you popcorn?" Cordy asked, obviously amazed. "I never knew he liked it." Fred nodded and grinned.
"Yup. And a jumbo soda too. Something about sharing it." Cordy grinned. Just then, the door flew open and Amy ran into the room in tears.
"Amy, what's the matter, sweetie-pie?" Fred asked as she took the child into her lap.
"Y-you're leaving, aren't you?" Amy asked through her tears. "You're going back home." Fred and Cordy looked at each other with confusion.
"What are you talking about, honey?" Fred asked, wanting to know the full story as to what had made Amy so upset.
"You said that you would never leave me!" Amy whimpered as she clung to Fred's shoulder as Fred held her close. "You said you would always be part of our Ohana. You lied. Didn't you?" Now she was sobbing harder than ever. Fred held her niece close and looked up at Cordy.
"I'll leave you two alone," Cordy said as she got up and left to go check on Connor.
After Cordy was gone, Fred hugged Amy close and said gently, but firmly, "I would NEVER leave you," she promised. Then she looked down at Amy. "Remember what I said Ohana meant?" Amy nodded and hiccupped.
"It-it means family and family means no-nobody gets left be-behind." She recited through her tears.
"That's right," Fred said as she stroked Amy's hair. "And that will never change."
"But Daddy said that... He said that you..." Amy said as more tears came.
"What did your Daddy say?" Fred asked.
"He and Uncle Gunn said that you were homesick and that you might go back home." Fred nodded and prepared to carry a still crying Amy downstairs.
"Let's just see what they were talking about, shall we?" She asked as she picked Amy up and proceeded down to the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" Angel asked when Fred entered the room with Amy in her arms. "What happened?"
"That's what I would like to know." Fred said, eyeing both men evenly. "Did you tell Amy that I was leaving?" Angel shook his head and Gunn looked away.
"I may have suggested it to Gunn," Angel said with an apologetic look towards Fred. Fred nodded.
"Well, I don't remember saying anything to anyone about it and I hope I'm not going anywhere anytime soon." Angel nodded and tried not to laugh.
"We don't want you to leave," he said sincerely. "Gunn told me about the nightmare you had last night and we just thought you missed Texas. That's all."
"I do miss Texas," Fred admitted, "but that doesn't mean I'm going to go back home. My life is here with you guys." Angel nodded and Gunn coughed nervously.
"Sorry," he said to Fred. "I didn't mean to say anything to Angel."
"That's okay, Charles. It's time I talked about it anyway. I guess I just needed a push." Then she looked down at Amy who was still crying. "You hear?" Fred asked as she semi-tickled Amy's tummy to make her smile. "I am NOT going anywhere so you don't have to worry." Amy nodded and gave Fred a kiss and a hug which Fred returned. "Now what do you say, you go wash your face and I'll read you a book after I'm done talking to your Daddy and Uncle Charles." This made Amy grin from ear to ear.
"Okay." She said as Fred set her down gently. After she gave Fred another hug, she went to the bathroom.
"She really loves you," Angel said, referring to Amy. Fred nodded and smiled.
"I love her too."
"So what did you dream about that you think it's time to discuss?" Angel asked.
"Well, it's something that happened in Pylea and I never got over it." Fred began. "It was really scary and I still have nightmares about it."
"Like the one you had last night," Gunn interjected.
"Right. Like the one I had last night." Fred agreed as she looked carefully at her two friends.
